Heat stroke a concern this week

BROOKHAVEN — Temperatures are forecast to reach 99 to 100 degrees until Thursday putting Lincoln County and Southwest Mississippi in the extreme heat risk category according to the National Weather Service in Jackson. Heat indices could rise above 110 degrees these next few days.

NWS Jackson warns the high temperatures could mean heat stroke is imminent with prolonged outdoor activity. Heat indices could reach 115 in the region. Tuesday’s temperature are forecast to get to 97 degrees by 4 p.m. before cooling off into the evening.

Tuesday’s forecasted high would be 7 degrees cooler than the record high for August 1 set in 1896. It is five degrees higher than the longterm average high of 93 degrees. The coolest temperature recorded on August 1 was 60 degrees set in 1965.

NWS Jackson offered some tips for people to stay safe in the heat this week in addition to staying hydrated. On the job site, workers should stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as much as possible.

People need to check on the elderly, sick and those without air conditioning. Be sure to never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles as the temperatures could be deadly. Outdoor strenuous activities should be limited but make sure to find shade and stay hydrated.

Wednesday’s forecast in Brookhaven calls for a high of 98 with a heat index as high as 110.

Wind will be calm Wednesday before blowing around 5 mph in the morning. The low Wednesday night is 75.

Thursday has a high of 98 with a southwest wind blowing 5 to 10 mph. The low Thursday night is 75 although the mostly clear night sky should allow heat to escape.

Friday will be sunny and hot again with a high of 98.

NWS Jackson forecasts a 20 percent chance of rain each day from Wednesday to Saturday. The long range forecast shows Monday could have a high of 96 and a 50 percent chance of rain.
