BROOKHAVEN — Sirens from a fire truck, police cars and an ambulance blared through downtown Brookhaven around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The first responders answered a call of a car on fire at Simmon’s Auto Repair located at 1002 S. First Street in Brookhaven.
Firefighters sprayed down the car upon arrival extinguishing flames and by 3:57 p.m. were done battling any burning embers. There was no smoke rising from the car by that point either. Only a charred white old sedan sat in the mud. Owner Tim Simmons walked up to the wreckage from his repair shop. He said it was not a car of any of his customers.
“They got here quickly. I was impressed,” he said. “We are grateful it didn’t catch any of the customer’s cars on fire. It appears they tried to turn around, got stuck and caught on fire. We are also grateful it was not dry today. The car fire could have caught the fields and woods on fire.”
No one was injured at the scene. Simmons had to pull a fire truck from Brookhaven Fire Department out of the mud after it lost traction trying to leave the field by the repair shop where vehicles are kept.
