BROOKHAVEN — National Weather Service in Jackson announced Tuesday morning there was an elevated risk for flash flooding in Lincoln County and SW Mississippi as rain continues to fall. There are multiple rounds of rainfall expected for the area, the report said.
These rains could dump three to six inches with local rainfall possibly higher. Areas of flash flooding are likely and some roads may be flooded or closed. 1.83 inches of rain fell yesterday bringing up the monthly total to 6.33 inches. August’s average is 2.42. This year has seen 46.76 inches of rain which is higher than the average of 34.49 inches of rain.
The rain is also wrecking havoc on the MAIS softball schedule as Brookhaven Academy had to cancel its game against Silliman Institute tonight and Copiah Academy had to cancel its game against Adams County Christian School last night.
Copiah-Lincoln Community College is providing a safe haven for local soccer teams. Last night, Brookhaven Academy played St. Augustine in a non-conference match and the Cougars will return to the turf field for a match against Laurel. Kickoff for Varsity is set for 6 with JV following the match, however rain may delay the varsity match.
