A new product rolled out by the state of Mississippi might just have your back for those times you’ve left your wallet at home and find yourself needing to show identification.
In November, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety introduced the “Mississippi Mobile ID” for residents, a digital version of a physical driver’s license residents access from an app on their cell phones.
DPS partnered with IDEMIA, a biometric and identity solutions provider, to produce the voluntary program. Residents can still choose to rely on physical IDs as well.
The DPS said that the convenience, security and privacy of Mobile ID will give residents instant access to an up-to-date version of their license or ID. It can be used as a legal form of identity verification anywhere in the state.
The DPS said the app also expands residents’ ability to provide proof of identity online since the information is secure and can only be accessed with their own fingerprint or face ID. Mississippi Mobile ID also protects private data by allowing residents to choose what information they share for age-verified transactions.
“The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is committed to utilizing technology to enhance the quality of our residents’ lives,” said DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell in a press release. “While Mississippi Mobile ID will be voluntary, it is our belief that residents will find this new service to be convenient, secure and private.”
