Absentee voting has begun for city primaries

Monday was the first day to vote by an absentee ballot for the 2021 Brookhaven Municipal Primary Election.

The office of City Clerk Samantha Melancon will mail absentee ballots to voters on the permanently disabled list Thursday.

Deadline for in-person absentee voting is noon, April 3. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked on or before April 6 and received by the city clerk’s office within five business days.

The primary is scheduled for April 6. Polls will be open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. A photo ID is required for all in-person voting and in-person absentee voting.

Anyone who has not registered to vote has until 5 p.m. March 8 to do so, either in-person at the office of Circuit Clerk Dustin Bairfield or at the city clerk’s office or by mailing registration applications postmarked no later than March 8.

In addition to weekday voting 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., the city clerk’s office will be open three Saturdays for absentee voting — March 6, March 27 and April 3, 8 a.m. until noon. Voter registration can also be completed Saturday, March 6 in the clerk’s office.

Voters in the primary elections must choose either a Democrat ballot or Republican ballot.

Primary runoff election day is April 27. The general election will take place June 8.

In-person voting for municipal elections must be done at a voter’s appropriate ward.

Ward 1, Bi-Centennial — Bi-Centennial Building, 200 Main St.

Ward 2, Alexander — Alexander Jr. High School auditorium, 713 Beauregard St.

Ward 3, Lincoln County Courthouse — Lincoln County/Brookhaven Governmental Complex City Board Room, 301 South First St.

Ward 4, Brookhaven Elementary — Brookhaven Elementary School auditorium, 300 South Church St.

Ward 5, Brookhaven Recreation Dept. — Brookhaven Recreation Department main room, 689 Hwy. 51 N.

Ward 6, Mamie Martin School — Mamie Martin Elementary School Room A-1, 420 Vivian Merritt St.

 

Poll worker training

Poll worker training will be Thursday, April 1 at 6 p.m. in the Circuit Court courtroom. Both the public and candidates are also invited to attend, Bairfield said.
