When “Home Town” hosts Ben and Erin Napier needed a roofing expert, they called on Bernie Reed.
Reed, the owner and president of Reed’s Metals Inc., headquartered in Brookhaven, will appear on the popular HGTV show Monday. Episode 209, “Room to Grow,” will premier at 8 p.m. and then be rebroadcast several times this month.
“Erin Napier calls in an expert — Mr. Reed — to talk through the design aspects for the metal roof they’re installing on the dilapidated farmhouse they’re renovating,” said Mariah Bowers with HGTV. “Mr. Reed explains the updated benefits of metal roofing nowadays — acrylic coating that prevents rust — and also helps Erin choose the style, profile and color of the roof.”
The roof is for a couple with two kids, in desperate need of more space, who hope to find a home with a big yard and studio for his work. They have an all-in budget of $200,000.
Reed flew in a few months ago and filmed for about two hours, helping Erin Napier make roofing decisions. He said they reshot scenes several times to get the right angles.
“She had narrowed it down to a couple of color choices,” he said. “I helped them pick out the profiles and told them the different advantages and styles. Her and I talked more about that. It’s pretty cool.”
His crew went back later and installed the roof.
Reed said a metal roof was a good choice for the couple because even though it initially costs more than shingles, the metal roof is designed to last around 60 years, making it about one-third the cost of a typical 20-year shingled roof.
Reed’s Metals has been involved with other television projects, but nothing for HGTV.
“It was really fun,” he said. “Erin and Ben are great, just down-to-earth good folks. I loved it.”
