The Brookhaven High School Choir will pack its bags and travel to Disney World in December to perform with other high school students across the country.

“Disney has candlelight processional performances that they put on every day and we’re excited to be a part of it,” said Charles Bridges, choir director. “The Disney level of quality is very high and very detailed to rehearse and perform. I’m ready to watch our kids react to that type of environment.”

Bridges, who has been the choir director at BHS for three years now, decided to send in an audition tape when Yens Oliva approached him about it.

Oliva was the previous choir director at BHS, but has since moved to Orlando, Florida.

“We sent in our audition tape and we received a response very quickly that we had been accepted,” said Bridges. “We were very excited.”

The 45-member choir will travel on a charter bus and will be in Disney from Dec. 2-5.

Alexander Jr. High choir students will tag along for the trip. They will not be performing, but they will experience what the rehearsal experience entails.

For Bridges, he said he’s excited to see how students react in a different environment.

“Many of our kids have never left the state and they haven’t performed in a large setting with a full processional and professional soloist,” said Bridges. “I’m ready to watch the new experiences they have and how they react to rehearsing in front of a conductor that they don’t know and meeting people from all over the world.”

They will have two performances at the Epcot Amphitheater on Dec. 4, one at 6:30 p.m. and one at 8 p.m.

The choir’s goal is to raise $7,000 for a charter bus so they’re hosting a 5K Nov. 18. To make a donation, visit olebrooksingers.com.
