A Brookhaven couple was injured Thursday night when their car was hit by a Kenworth garbage truck as they tried to cross over Hwy. 84 at Jackson Liberty Drive.
Howard Smith and Betty Smith, both 81, were taken by ambulance to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb, said Cpl. Brandon Fortenberry with Troop M of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
According to a nursing supervisor, Betty Smith was treated and released, while Howard Smith was transferred to University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Howard Smith was driving a Honda sedan with Betty Smith in the passenger seat. He attempted to cross over Hwy. 84 from Jackson Liberty Road shortly after 5 p.m. Smith failed to yield right-of-way to the garbage truck, which was traveling east on Hwy. 84, he said. The truck collided with the passenger side of the Honda.
The driver, Hilton Thornton, 54, of Carthage, was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation by MHP.
