SOUTHAVEN (AP) — Family members of a man killed by police outside his mobile home have hired a lawyer to look into the shooting.

The Commercial Appeal reports Ismael Lopez, an auto mechanic, was shot to death by police in Southaven Sunday night. DeSoto County District Attorney John Champion said Monday that two officers were at the scene when Lopez was shot. According to Champion, police said they fired after a pit bull dog burst out of the house as they searched for a suspect — and after a man pointed a gun at them through an open door.

At a news conference Tuesday, Memphis attorney Murray Wells said police were at the wrong address — a possibility Champion raised Monday.

“They should have never been on the property in the first place,” Wells said. Wells, hired by the family to investigate the shooting, said Lopez, a gun owner, didn’t have a gun in his hand when he was shot.
