The Brookhaven Academy Cougar offense showed signs of gelling in head coach Ron Rushing’s quick-hit offense, but Centreville Academy’s three score lead early proved too much for the Cougars to overcome, losing 39-14 at home Friday.
Senior quarterback Madison Smith threw for a season-high of 258 yards and two touchdowns on 14-25 passing including a long of 53 yards to senior wideout Fisher Warren.
Warren also posted a season high of seven catches and 131 yards. Sophomore Cade Brown hauled in five catches and eclipsed the 100-yard threshold with 110 yards and a 38-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.
Brookhaven seemed to focus solely on the passing game in this outing. As a result, they only registerd two yards on the ground in the loss.
Senior linebacker Connor Griffin led the Cougars in tackles with 7.5 including a sack. Griffin’s younger brother, Cole also sacked CA quarterback Tyler Thomassie. Madison
Smith and sophomore Keegan Smith had seven tackles apiece. Justin Burt, Kyle Cupit and Connor Smith each tallied five tackles.
Thomassie finished the night with a 3-of-4 for 70 yards passing clip. Two of his three completions on the night were taken in for a score.
Whereas the Cougars took to the airways to impose their will, the Tigers used their ground game to get the win.
They ended the game with a total of 240 yards on the ground. Austin Addington led the way with 140 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.
Matthew Parnell of Centreville caught two passes for 46 yards and one score to lead all Tiger wideouts. Haze Greer also had one catch for a 24-yard touchdown.
The Tigers got things going halfway through the first when Addington took a handoff in for a 59-yard score. Less than three minutes later, Centreville struck again. This time, Thomassie found Parnell for a 31-yard touchdown catch to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Thomassie would throw another score with 9:34 left in the second quarter after he connected with Greer for the aforementioned 24-yard touchdown to put the Tigers up 21-0.
The Cougars finally got on the board with 1:17 left in the half after Madison Smith threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Brown. Keegan Smith drilled the extra point attempt to bring the score to 21-7.
In the third quarter, Addington struck again as he was able to find the endzone after a 20-yard scamper. The Tigers failed to convert the two-point conversion, which brought the score to 27-7 in their favor.
BA found the endzone later in the quarter by way of a 53-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Warren to trim the Cougars’ deficit to 13.
The Tigers sealed the deal in the fourth quarter by scoring two more times and not allowing the Cougars to do so.
The first came on a six-yard score by Scott Chandler, and the second was a nine-yard touchdown run by Daniel Vine. Centreville failed to convert both two-point attempts, which brought the game to its final score of 39-14.
Injuries have cost the Cougars some consistency on the offensive side of the ball, but Friday night in Brookhaven Rushing will have his squad ready to face his former team, the Cathedral Green Wave, at home hoping to get their first win of the season. Kickoff for that game is set for 7 p.m.
