Aldermen accept Dean Hill streets

In a special called meeting Tuesday night, the Brookhaven Board of Aldermen unanimously agreed to accept the streets, water and sewer systems of the Dean Hill subdivision as city property.
City attorney Joe Fernald explained that the city received a letter in the form of a petition from the developer and homeowners asking to dedicate the streets to the city.
“I talked to Keith (Lewis), Mike McKenzie and David (Fearn) about it, so the public works director, city engineer and building inspector believe it’s all in compliance with the statue,” Fernald said. “The streets were built to our specifications, with the proper bedding, the proper asphalt, and everything was done according to the rules and regulations of our building code. Keith inspected it within the last few days, so he can go on record with the board that it’s acceptable.”
Public Works Director Keith Lewis added his approval.
“The streets look good and are up to our specs,” Lewis said. “We had already done all the water line and sewer tests — they were done a while back. We also checked the retention ponds. Everything that we asked for has been done.”
Fernald said there is a city statute that covers the acceptance and maintenance of streets before a subdivision is completed, and the developer met the criteria of it.
City building inspector David Fearn added, “The reason we’re doing this dedication of the street now is because we should have done it in the past (based on the statute) before development even started.”
Budget public hearing
Following the special called meeting the board opened a public hearing pertaining to the 2016-2017 budget.
Despite approximately 20 people attending the meeting, when Mayor Joe Cox asked for questions, comments or requests, no one stood up.
The board is expected to approve the proposed budget at its Tuesday meeting.
