Cougars prepping for Parklane tourney

A relatively young Brookhaven Academy slow-pitch softball team has gotten off to a decent start in 2016.

In fact, before the recent heavy downpours forced them to go 12 days in a row without being on the diamond, they were one game over .500 at 4-3.

“We were just on an emotional roller coaster practicing indoors and watching game after game get cancelled,” head coach Becky Flowers said. “That’s tough on all players, but it’s especially difficult for your pitchers to stay sharp.”

After the team was finally able to take the field again, they dropped four in a row to bring their record to 4-7 on the season. There have been some bright spots as the season progresses,  though. Senior Anna Grace Covington, a player Flowers said is one of her strongest hitters, has begun to find her swing as of late. Power-hitting first baseman Cameron Watson is coming into her own as well. The junior has hit three singles and a double in her last three games. She also has a homer on the year.

“Cam has always had quick hands and she’s seeing the ball really well right now,” Flowers said. “It really helps when the older girls step up and lead offensively.”

The Cougars were slated for an away game against Prentiss, but the contest was cancelled due to inclement weather. They will face Central Private, Oak Forest and Adams County Christian in the Parklane tournament this weekend. The Cougars defeated Central Private earlier in the season and were bested by ACCS 6-3.

Coach Flowers said she felt the tournament would be a good opportunity for her team to get back into the swing of things after the delay.

“We use tournaments to practice and prepare for district,” Flowers said.

“We generally play very well due to the reduced game times.”

The Cougars’ head coach said she was confident in her team heading into the weekend tournament.

“I‘ve really been confident in the girls all along. At the end of the day, I feel if we can pitch well and reduce mistakes, we will be in every game we play,” Flowers said.
