The Wesson Cobras are off to a good start to the season after defeating McLaurin 14-12 in their first game.

“We are happy to get the win. It was an ugly one in every way,” Cobras head coach Jeremy Loy said. “We are happy to get this win under our belt and we are 1-0 regardless. We will go on from here and fix our mistakes and keep getting better.”

The Bobcats dropped their first game of the season to Enterprise 36-30 and will likely be looking to get back into the win column.

Cobra quarterback Peyton Burns was completed by Thigpen to gain 36 yards, but the Cobras were unable to make it to the end zone. The Cobras defensive linemen Trey Glasper and Chamar Martin put pressure on the Tiger offense and Jeremiah Barlow made a tackle in the end zone for a safety to put two points on the scoreboard for the Cobras.

The Cobras took over possession again on their own six-yard line, but fumbled the ball. McLaurin freshman Kenny Bacon recovered it and ran in the first touchdown of the night. Cobras’ Joseph Carraway and Damien Smith blocked the extra point attempt ending the first quarter with a score of 6-2.

Jeremiah Barlow ran in the touchdown for the Cobras in the second quarter to to give the Cobras an 8-6  lead after the field goal was blocked.

The Tigers responded with a score of their own after the half via a scooped fumble on their own six-yard line. The failed extra point broutht the score to 12-8.

The Cobras answered back in the same quarter after Burns completed a 16-yard score to Will Hulon to give his team a 14-12 advantage after the field goal was missed.

The biggest action in the fourth came when Slay Acy stepped in front of a pass and returned it for a score. It was called back for holding, but the Cobras held their advantage to take the victory.
