Albies leads M-Braves to third straight victory

PEARL — Ozzie Albies went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored to lead the Mississippi Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits Thursday at Trustmark Park. The series continues today at 7 p.m.

Mississippi (42-41, 8-6) scored three run on five hits. Montgomery (42-42, 8-6) had two runs on five hits as well. The M-Braves jumped out to a quick advantage and held that lead until the sixth.

Ozzie Albies tripled and scored on a Dansby Swanson sacrifice fly to left field, giving the M-Braves a 1-0 lead in the first. Jacob Schrader blasted a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the second, extending the Braves lead to 2-0. It was Schrader’s ninth home run of the year.

Lucas Sims tossed five scoreless innings before sixth-inning trouble. Ultimately, he worked 5.1 innings and gave up two earned runs on just two hits and three walks. He struck out six batters.

Montgomery tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth. Mike Marjama walked, Willy Adames singled and Jake Bauers walked to load the bases with one out. Patrick Leonard then dropped a ground-rule double into left-center, plating two runs to tie the game.

Albies and Connor Lien both singled to start the seventh. After a double steal, Swanson was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Dustin Peterson then drew a walk, bringing home Albies for the go-ahead run.

Steve Kent (1-2) worked two frames and picked up the victory. Madison Younger (S, 9) came on in the eighth to record the final five outs and notch the save.

Chris Kirsch started and went five frames for the Biscuits but did not factor in the decision. He surrendered two earned runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out five. Brad Schreiber (1-2) worked 1.1 innings and took the loss.

In Friday night’s series finale, the M-Braves send southpaw Sean Newcomb (4-5, 4.14) to the hill against Biscuits righty Yonny Chirinos (2-0, 2.19). First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m.
