Thomas, Watts win gold

Abby Thomas captured double state championship gold for Loyd Star Friday night in the Class 2A State Track meet in Pearl. Thomas secured her first gold medal in the girls’ 1600-meter run with a time of 5:36. Her second gold medal came in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:00. Thomas, a sophomore, has won first place in both distance events in district, regionals and south state competitions.
Jason Watts, of West Lincoln, captured gold in the boys’ 3200-meter run with a time of 10:25. Watts decided not to run in the 1600-meter event. Watts, a senior, finished in first place in 3200-meter run events in district, regionals and south state.
Loyd Star’s Leondre Dodds, an eighth grader, finished seventh in his first appearance in the state 1600-meter run. Dodds’ time was 5:33.41.
West Lincoln’s Jonathan Mathis, a ninth grader, finished seventh in his first appearance in the state 3200-meter run with a time of 12:01.
