The Brookhaven Academy Cougars were looking to bounce back from a Thursday night loss at the hands of the Parklane Pioneers and did just that with a convincing 9-1 victory over the visiting Bowling Green Buccaneers Friday evening at Harold Williams Ballpark.
Highlighted by a two-hit, five-RBI night performance from senior slugger William King, including a two-run homerun, the Cougars were able to keep the pressure on the Buccaneers from the start and coast to the win. Taylor Freeny added a double and a single to the BA hit column. JT Cline also contributed two hits on the afternoon. Fisher Warren, Carter Culbertson, Connor Smith and Justin Burt each added a single to the Cougar 10-hit output.
“We had some good approaches at the plate tonight,” said BA head coach Tyler Parvin. “We were patient and made their pitchers throw strikes, then hit the ball hard when they did.”
Connor Smith made his first start of the season on the mound for the Cougars and cruised his way through seven productive innings to pick up the win. Smith struck out six Buccaneer batters while giving up just four hits and one base on balls.
“I can’t say enough about the job Connor (Smith) did tonight for us on the hill,” said Parvin. “We were short-handed with a few of our starters fighting a stomach virus and he stepped up threw strikes from start to finish. I’m really proud of his effort.”
The Cougars are back in action Monday as they travel north to take on the Copiah Academy Colonels. JV first pitch is set for 4 p.m., followed by varsity action at 6.
