Lady Wolves win one of two in Meridian Tournament

MERIDIAN – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves won one of two games in the Rush-Meridian Tournament Saturday falling to Shelton State (AL) 6-5 and defeating East Mississippi 8-6.
Co-Lin travels to Mississippi Delta for a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 1 p.m.
Shelton State 6, Co-Lin 5
Shelton State rallied for 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning to get the 6-5 win.
Sophomore Jessica Crum belted a three run shot to left field that gave the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Courtney Richardson plated Paige Barnett with a single in the top of the second to pull Shelton to 3-1.
The Lady Wolves extended the lead to 4-1 when Mattie Avants scored on an error in the bottom half of the second.
Jasmine Thompson scored for Shelton State in the third after on an RBI single from Tanner Brown to cut the Lady Wolves lead to 4-2.
In the fifth, Shelton pulled to 4-3 as Thompson came across the plate again after Morgan Burbage grounded out to short.
In the top of the seventh, Jenna Chandler led off the inning with a double to right field. Kaylee Sparks reached on an error. Thompson singled to load the bases. Tanner Brown reached on an error scoring two runs to give Shelton a 5-4 lead. Shelton picked up another run to extend the lead 6-4 on another Co-Lin error.
The Lady Wolves tried to mount a rally in the seventh as Jessica Crum hit her second home run of the game to pull Co-Lin to 6-5.
Kaitlyn Taylor suffered the loss for the Lady Wolves after giving up six runs (two earned) on nine hits and striking out four strikeouts pitching the complete game.
Hannah Payne picked up the win for Shelton allowing one run on two hits, striking out one in four innings of work. Starter Allison Galle gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits, striking out 2, and walking 1 in 3 innings.
Crum led the Lady Wolves at the plate with two home runs (four RBIs). Trevlynn Scott went three for three in the game. Btittany Barbay, Lauren Brashier, and Jamie Martin added support with a single apiece. Kamryn Vanlandingham had an RBI.
Thompson led Shelton State with three hits. Chandler doubled. Courtney Richardson had 2 singles. Brown singled (3 RBIs).
Co-Lin 8, East Mississippi 6
The Co-Lin Lady Wolves pounded out 13 hits in game two to get the 8-6 win over the East Mississippi Lady Lions.
Co-Lin got on the board first after Taylor scored Brashier’s double to center field. Martin followed with a double that plated Taylor to give the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Vanlandingham crossed the plate after another base hit from Taylor to put Co-Lin up 3-0.
East Mississippi found their offense in the bottom of the third as they scored three runs to tie the game at 3-all.
The Lady Lions plated another two runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Barbay delivered a 3-run RBI double in the top of the sixth to give the Lady Wolves a 8-5 lead. Trailing 5-3 in the top of the inning, Mackenzie Byrd drew a lead off walk. With one out, Vanlandingham doubled to centerfield advancing Byrd to third. Byrd scored on Brashier’s sacrifice fly to pull the Lady Wolves to 5-4. Crum doubled to left to plate Vanlandingham to tie the game at 5-all. Taylor and Dianna Hobgood drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Barbay’s 3-run double gave the Lady Wolves an 8-5 lead.
East Mississippi added a run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-6.
Kamry Creel pitched a complete game for the Lady Wolves, giving up 6 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, striking out 2, and walking 2.
Jordon Self suffered the loss giving up 5 runs on 4 hits, striking out 1 and walking 3 in 5 innings. Starter Zoie LaVergne threw 2 innings allowing 3 runs (all earned) on 9 hits, and striking out 2.
Barbay had two doubles and a single (2 RBIs). Crum (1 RBI) and Vanlandingham doubled and had a pair of singles apiece. Taylor doubled and singed (1RBI). Martin doubled (1 RBI). Adding support with a single was Brashier.
Emily Patrick and Blake Rigdon led East Mississippi with two hits each. Sydney Olander led the team with three RBIs.
