Lawrence Co. sweeps Wesson

MONTICELLO – Lawrence County swept a double-header from Wesson in high school basketball action Monday night at Lawrence County High School. The games were part of Lawrence County’s annual Thanksgiving Classic. Play began at 9 a.m. and continued throughout the day.
In the girls’ game, Vicki Rutland’s Lady Cougars used smothering defense to eventually pull away from Wesson, winning 44-30. Camryn Davis and Haven Johnson scored 12 points each to lead the Lawrence County. Davis also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
DeNeisha Dickson battled early foul trouble and scored seven points. Zipporah Baylis added six. Baylis also drew two charging fouls.
With the win, the Lady Cougars improved to 3-2 on the young season. Wesson, coached by Rusty Newman, fell to 1-3. Aurianna Vaughn led the Lady Cobras with nine points. Jashia Smith, who entered averaging 15 points per game was saddled with foul trouble throughout. She eventually fouled out with four points.
The boys’ game was very similar to the girls’ contest. Both were relatively slow-paced, half-court games, with Lawrence County winning out with smothering defense. The Cougars won by a 47-27 margin.
Keyshawn Feazell led LCHS with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Gabriel Lewis added 11 points. Phillip Moore added eight points and four assists. Myron Moore had seven points.
Pat Bridges’ Cougars improved to 4-2 with the win. The Wesson boys, also coached by Rusty Newman, fell to 1-3.
The dynamic duo of Anthony Jones and Eric Rhymes combined for 23 of Wesson’s 27 points. Jones fouled out with 12 points. Rhymes added 11.
Today’s schedule featured morning games between Bogue Chitto and East Marion, and afternoon contests between Wesson and Tylertown. The final games of the two-day event will pit host Lawrence County against Pearl in girls’ and boys’ contests tonight.
