Wesson (3-6, 0-3), coached by Ronald Greer, suffered another tough Region 7-3A loss Friday as the Jefferson County Tigers prevailed 14-6 in Fayette.
This week, the Cobras return home to battle the Franklin County Bulldogs for another big division test.
Wesson finished the game with 278 yards of total offense last week against Jefferson County. The Cobras rushed for 261 yards on 40 carries, and were 4-of-16 passing for 108 yards. Cornelius Barlow was the offensive leader with three catches for 115 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Bobby Pritchard and Jamarcus Smith powered the Cobras with five tackles each.
Franklin County (5-4, 2-1), coached by Anthony Hart, climbed back into the win column Friday night with a 28-6 homecoming victory over the Port Gibson Blue Waves in Meadville.
This week, the Bulldogs are looking to keep a tight grip on second place in the Region 7-2A race.
FC’s top offensive player last week against Port Gibson was junior receiver De’Martre Collins with four catches for 68 yards. Collins caught a 50-yard touchdown pass and scored two rushing touchdowns. Thomas Slagle kicked 3-of-4 extra point attempts for the Bulldogs.
Defensively, senior linebacker Chris O’Quinn led with a team high nine tackles and a pass deflection. Marquavis Dunn had eight tackles. Deion Buckles had seven hits and an interception. Cameron Young added two sacks and five tackles, including three for lost yardage. Kentrell Franklin and Dominique White finished with five tackles each. Ryan Johnson had four tackles and recovered a fumble. Keonte Bee intercepted a pass and had three tackles.
Last year, Franklin County thumped Wesson 40-7 in Meadville.
My prediction: the Bulldogs prevail 36-18.
