Loyd Star (3-6, 1-2), led by second-year head coach Adam Cook, celebrated 50 years of football Friday night with a big Region 7-2A win over the Enterprise Yellow Jackets in the Sting Bowl.
This week, the Hornets will have a tough battle when they welcome the current Region 7-2A leader, the Bassfield Yellowjackets, to W.E. “Sambo” Smith Field.
The Yellowjackets (7-2, 3-0), coached by Lance Mancuso, captured a big Region 7-2A win over the Amite County Trojans 54-28 last Friday in Bassfield.
Senior quarterback Timothy Arnold was the leader for Bassfield Friday as he completed 6-of-11 passes for 184 yards and four touchdowns. Rashaud Green powered the ground attack with nine carries for 143 yards. Gerald Reese contributed 10 rushes for 115 yards and Ron Thompson had 16 carries for 100 yards.
Ricardo Boothe directed Bassfield’s defense with seven tackles. Malik Shorts and Drudon Knight provided five tackles each.
Loyd Star’s top offensive performer last week against Enterprise was Parker Flowers with 152 yards rushing on 14 carries and three touchdowns. Patrick Price contributed four rushes for 63 yards and a touchdown. Blake Ramsey had 52 yards on nine carries and had a touchdown.
Michael Harvey completed 8-of-12 passes for 138 yards, one touchdown and an interception. James Beard was top the receiver with seven catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Flowers led the Hornets with 29 tackles. Konner Allen, Blake Ramsey and Thomas Patterson contributed eight stops each. Anfernee Claire provided seven tackles. Bradyn Brister, Nicholas Smith and Price recovered a fumble each.
Last year, Bassfield cruised past Loyd Star 66-18 in Bassfield.
My prediction: Bassfield prevails 48-20.
