BROOKHAVEN – In Saturday’s Ole Brook Softball Classic, the Lawrence County Lady Cougars rolled to three straight lop-sided wins. First, in a morning contest, LCHS slammed Warren Central by a score of 14-3. Hours later, the Lady Cougars trounced Wesson 18-3 and rolled Vicksburg by a 15-0 score.
The math is pretty easy. In three contests, Lawrence County outscored its opponents 47-6. The Lady Cougars slammed 12 home runs in running their record to 17-2 on the season.
“We had a good day,” said Lady Cougar coach Meleah Howard. “But we’ve still got plenty of room for improvement. We had some poor at-bats, and we had a few glitches in the field. We’ll keep working to improve.”
The Lady Cougars started a bit slowly in the early game. They led just 4-3 through three innings but exploded for 10 runs in their final two at-bats. The game was halted via the 10-run rule after five innings.
Zyon Feazell hit two home runs that drove in a total of five runs. Jordan Harp hit a grand slam homer. Maddux Kirkland and Amanda Rushing also homered. Feazell, Rushing and Sydney Pevey each had three hits for LCHS. Harp added two hits.
For Warren Central, Ashley Coley had two hits, and Brooke Patterson hit a solo home run.
On Thursday night, Lawrence County and Wesson battled in a very competitive scrap. It wasn’t that way on Saturday, as LCHS scored nine runs in each of the first two innings en route to an 18-3 blowout.
In the top of the first, Lady Cougar outfielder Tyranesha hit two home runs, and Jordan Harp added another. In the second, Amanda Rushing and pitcher Barri Rogers both whacked long balls. Davis and Harp led Lawrence County with three hits each. Rushing, Rogers and Feazell each had two hits.
In their final game of the day, the Lady Cougars led Vicksburg just 2-0 after two innings, then exploded for 13 runs in the third and fourth frames. Sydney Pevey hit a three-run homer in the third inning, and Zyon Feazell hit a monumental two-run blast in the fourth.
Jordan Harp wrapped up an eight-for-nine day with three more hits. Pevey, Davis and Emalee Gaffney each had two hits.
Barri Rogers was the winning pitcher in all three Lawrence County wins. Julianna Johnson also saw pitching action, working in the Wesson and Vicksburg games.
The Lady Cougars will take to the road twice this week, playing at Mize on Tuesday and Raleigh on Thursday. Lawrence County will host its own tournament next Saturday.
