BOGUE CHITTO – The Bogue Chitto Bobcats started their 2015 football season Friday night at Troy Smith Field as they hosted a jamboree against two Region 2A opponents – the Amite County Trojans and the East Marion Eagles.
The three teams played a quarter apiece as the Bobcats took the field first against the Trojans. Amite County would strike first and score on their opening drive.
The young Bobcats are still rebuilding their program, but there are some good signs of improvements since last year. Coach Gareth Sartin and the rest of his coaching staff played several of their young athletes during the scrimmage to get some experience under their belt.
Bogue Chitto’s Kobe Robert made a great defensive tackle from behind, when he managed to chase down Amite County’s running back to keep the Trojans from scoring. BC’s defense stood strong after that play to keep Amite County out of the endzone.
In the last few minutes of the contest, Amite County scored again to end the quarter to prevail 16-0.
Even though Bogue Chitto did not score any in the quarter, there were signs of a good football season awaiting the Bobcats.
In the second quarter of action, the Trojans battled their former Region 7-2A archrivals, the East Marion Eagles. Both teams fought hard and provided an exciting contest for the fans as the Bobcats prepared for East Marion during their quarter break.
In the final quarter of action, BC played East Marion. The Eagles were a better team between the two, but the Bobcats did move the ball against East Marion.
During the contest, Bogue Chitto had some key mistakes that hurt their momentum. The Bobcats turned the ball over by throwing an interception to start the game. East Marion capitalized by scoring a touchdown on their opening drive.
The Bobcats made another mistake that hindered their ability to score. East Marion was able to capitalize on it and score again.
BC’s defense played well against East Marion, but the Eagles were much bigger up front.
Bogue Chitto did manage to get some momentum going in their favor in the contest, when Roberts broke free from East Marion’s tough defense for a long run to put his Bobcats in good field position.
Roberts scored on the following play to put the Bobcats on the board after catching a pass in the middle of the field. BC was also successful on the two point conversion to end the scrimmage.
Bogue Chitto will officially start their regular season Friday night at Troy Smith Field as the Bobcats host the Loyd Star Hornets for the annual Possum Bowl contest. Game time is set for a 7 p.m.
