Volunteer firefighters prepare for car show

The annual “Smoking Tires and Putting Out Fires” car show and fundraiser is back again as the New Sight Volunteer Fire Department prepares for some large upcoming expenses.

New Sight VFD Chief Cory Smith said the department uses the funds to make up for some of their bigger expenses, like the prospect of buying a new fire truck in the not too distant future.

Volunteer fire departments receive some state and county funding, but donations still cover a large portion of their revenue.

“We have to purchase our fuel and supplies,” he said. “We’re all volunteers here.”

Smith said some of the department’s goals include helping out in a variety of ways from the standard fires and car accidents to the above-and-beyond of helping remove trees.

“We strive to help out in every way we can,” he said.

The event, which will take place on Aug. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at New Sight Baptist Church, will include both classic and custom cars, arts and crafts vendors, T-shirt sales, Mississippi Blood Services for blood donations and a dunking booth where individuals will have the chance to dunk firefighters. New Sight Baptist Church will also be serving food and drinks.

Smith said he hopes this year will continue the trend of more successful shows.

“The first year was probably a 60 percent success rate, partly due to rain,” he said. “Last year was probably 120 percent. It turned out better than we ever could have expected.”

Last year, the show had 42 cars, and they hope to double that this year. Smith said he is always amazed at the quality of the cars.

“There will be a car that was built 20 years before I was even born in tip top shape; better than my own car,” he said.

The car show is free to the public. Those wishing to enter the car show can pay either a $15 pre-registration fee or $20 the day of. Vendor booths are also available for $20. Applications are available at newsightvfd.webs.com
