BA Lady Cougars win South State AA in tennis

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and the Lady Cougars netters hosted the South State AA tournament Wednesday as several schools, ACCS, Laurel Christian, Hartfield, Silliman, Central Private and Simpson, competed in an all-day event at the Brookhill Tennis Courts for the chance to win the South State crown and advance to the MAIS State tournament in Jackson, Wednesday.
In the girls’ action, the BA Lady Cougars tennis team captured the South State AA crown after battling through several tough matches. The Lady Cougars finished with seven team points to secure the crown, while ACCS placed second with 5 1/2 team points.
In the boys’ competition, Brookhaven Academy finished with a final score of three team points.
Marlee Watts and Whitney Moak won the No. 1 girls doubles event by beating Silliman 6-0, 6-0; Laurel Christian 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the semifinals and ACCS 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.
Macey Lea and Missy Clanton won the No. 2 girls doubles by beating Central Private 6-0, 6-0; Laurel Christian 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals and Hartfield 6-3, 7-6 in the finals.
In mixed doubles action, Trent Nettles and Susanna Ratcliff finished second in the event. They beat Laurel Christian 6-4,6-3 and Silliman 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals, before falling to Simpson 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.
Shelby Flumm competed in the girls No. 2 singles and lost to Laurel Christian 6-4, 6-1.
In boys’ No. 1 singles, Jacob Wiggins beat Simpson 6-0, 6-0 before losing to Central Private 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals.
In boys’ No. 1 doubles, Peyton Hood and Dylan Winborne beat Silliman 6-0, 6-0 before losing to Hartfield 7-5, 6-0 in the semifinals.
In boys’ No. 2 doubles, Zach Carr and Gray Anding fell to Laurel Christian 6-0, 6-0.
