Hornets thump West Lincoln on Senior Night

The Loyd Star Hornets knocked off the West Lincoln Bears 13-3 in baseball action Monday night to finish their race through Region 7-2A undefeated at Smith Field.

The Hornets celebrated Senior Night Monday as they recognized Hayden Brownlee, Dorian Beard, Brett Calcote, Jordan Michel and Caleb Yarborough as Friend and families gathered to show their support.

“I’m proud of the guys for coming out ready to play,” said Loyd Star Coach Jared Britt. “Our bats headed up and gave Cade Hodges some run support. I am proud for the seniors. They all have put in a lot of hard work and sweat to earn their first division championship. Now, we must regroup and start preparing for Lake Thursday.”

The Loyd Star Hornets (15-5, 10-0) will begin their run in the Class 2A state playoffs Thursday as they host the Lake Hornets for Game One, starting at 6 p.m. Loouyd Star will travel for Game Two on Friday at Lake for a 6 p.m. start. In a Game Three is needed, Loyd Star will play Lake at home, starting at 3 p.m.

The Bears (9-9, 7-3) will also be in the Class 2A playoff hunt as they host Union Thursday for Game One, starting at 6 p.m. Game Two at Union at 6 p.m. In Game Three is necessary at West Lincoln Saturday.

The Loyd Star Hornets came out and quickly took care of business Monday night as they jumped on the Bears to claim a 10-0 in the first four innings of woek.

West Lincoln managed to get their offense going in the top of the fifth inning as scored three runs to keep the game going, but the Hornets answered in the bottom of the fifth inning as they plated three runs to end the contest in five innings.

Cade Hodges was the winning pitcher for the Hornets with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Daniel Spears suffered the setback on the mound for the Bears with no strikeouts and four walks.

Brett Calcote sparked Loyd Star’s offense with three singles. Lamar Lang and Konner Allen fuel the flames with a double and a single each. Dorian Beard, Bradyn Brister and Cade Hodges contributed a pair of singles apiece. Hayden Brownlee had a triple and five RBIs.

Seth Bivens paced the Bears at the plate with a double and a single. Bryce Temple and Daniel Spears hit safely.

In junior varsity action,  Loyd Star beat West Lincoln 3-2.

Brandon Lang was the winning pitcher for the Hornets.
