Wesson takes two from Crystal Springs

WESSON- The Wesson Cobras hosted the Crystal Springs Tigers Tuesday night for a big division game at the Snake Pit. The Lady Cobras took an early lead and ended the game with a win with a final score of 46-24. The Wesson Cobras and the Tigers played in a tight game with the Cobras ending up on top with a final score of 81-75. In JV boys’ action, the Tigers outplayed the Cobras with a 30-24 win.

The Cobras will host Wilkinson County Wildcats Friday night for their final regular season contest. The varsity teams begin play at 6 p.m. for the girls and the boys play at 7:30 in Wesson.

The Lady Cobras (4-5 district) led the Lady Tigers (1-7 district) Tuesday night and added another district win with a final score of 46-24.

Top Lady Cobra player, senior Kayla Britt, scored a total of 12 points and had a total of five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Other top scorers for the Lady Cobras were Carnesha Green and Aurianna Vaughn with eight points each. Green had 15 rebounds and Vaughn had four rebounds, four steals and three assists. The Lady Cobras were 17/41 in free throw action.

The top player of the game for the Lady Tigers was Jakiyah Johnson who scored five points and had one steal and one rebound. Aireyonna James was the top defender with six rebounds, three steals and three points. The Lady Tigers were 4/13 in free throw action.

Wesson coach Rusty Newman commented after the game, “The girls played well and executed on both ends of the floor especially in defense. Our defense led to an easy offense and I’m proud of the girls.”

Wesson 81, Crystal Springs 75 

The Wesson Cobras (6-3 district) defeated the Crystal Springs Tigers (7-2 district) Tuesday night with a final score of 81-75. The Cobras trailed the Tigers for most of the game but took the lead when senior Tyler Christmas took a charge in the lane and put the Cobras ahead from the free throw line.

Top Cobra scorer was sophomore Tyler Robinson who scored 31 points, which included two three-pointers and was 15/18 from the free throw line. Robinson also had six rebounds, three steals and one assist. Junior Anthony Jones was another top shooter with 19 points, nine rebounds, and three steals. The Cobras were 24/47 in free throws.

The Tigers top scorer was Miguel Powell who had a point total of 25, which included two three-pointers and had three steals and one assist. Rod Smith was top defender with eight rebounds, three steals and a point total of eight. The Tigers had an average of 20/33 in free throw action.

“I thought we played with a lot of heart and effort,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman after the game. “The guys refused to lose. They always found a way to make a play when it mattered.”

The Cobras JV boys’ team  also played but had a disappointing final score of 30-24 to the Tigers. Arthur Harris scored nine points and had five rebounds. James Benson was the top scorer for the Tigers with a point total of 11 and Pope Taylor was top defender with eight rebounds.
