McDaniel named MVP at BHS football awards banquet

Ole Brook’s faithful fans battled through the rainy conditions Thursday night to gather for Brookhaven’s annual Football/Cheerleader Awards Banquet held at the Brookhaven Parks & Recreation Department’s headquarters.
Clopton welcomed the crowd to the celebration of BHS football. Prior to the Meal, Clopton wanted to thanked his assistant coaches for their endless hours of work, and their wives, for their support. He also thanked the Booster Club, Sponsors, Brookhaven Police Department, Radio Crew, Transportation crew, athletic department, the support medical staff, and the voice of the Panthers Stan Patrick, and Terry Reed and Valerie Moore for letting the Panthers used the Brookhaven Recreational building.
The Rev. Phillip Hamilton provided the invocation prior to the meal. The Rev. Jason Holmes concluded the evening with the invocation. Both men serve as team chaplains.
The Panthers finished 6-5 on the season, with a 3-2 record in the Region 3-5A race.
Clopton recognized the 16 senior members of the squad. Each senior received their red game jersey and a gift bag, provided by the Gridiron Club. Clopton presented letterman certificates to the players. Each player received a participation certificate and the line of recipients stretch across half the room.
Clopton recognized Tavis Moore and Ken Boyd as the winners of the annual Therrell-Tanner Award. It was named in honor of deceased coaches R.L. Therrell and C.O. Tanner, who coached many successful teams at BHS and Alexander respectively.
Clopton also presented another special award in praise of the Voice of Stan Patrick’s 20 years of service to Brookhaven’s program. The award was named Stan Patrick “Boom” Award. The winner of this special award went to Darius O’Quinn. Tre McDaniel and Leo Lewis were recognized as permanent team captains.
Tristan Peavey received the Overall Scholastic Award. Coach Clopton also started a BHS Gridiron Academic All-Star Team. Members of the team were Lazorian McNulty, Tavis Moore, Alex Benson, Darrian Wilson, Tyler Mixon, Kris Brown, Jordan Nations, Stephen Springfield, Wanya Morris, Cole Kergosien, Tristan Peavey, Chandler Moore, Kirean Williams, Cassidy Durr, Jonathan Smith, Trace Owens, Trace Clopton, Ben Springfield and Montero Barton.
The Most Valuable Offensive Lineman Award went to Jared Dillon. Tre McDaniel was named Most Valuable Offensive Back and Ben Robinson earned the Most Valuable Defensive Back. Leo Lewis received the Most Valuable Linebacker award. Davion McCoy and Tristan Peavey received the Panther Award. All awards were voted on by the team members.
Before the end of the ceremony, Clopton revealed the winner of this year overall Most Valuable Player award. Clopton stated, “He was truly proud of this young man for all of his hard work and dedication as the team voted him the most valuable player,” and the award went to Tre McDaniel.
Cheerleader sponsors Amy Spring and Jerralyn Seals recognized her 28-member squad and praised their accomplishments during the season and at summer camp. Each member received certificates for participating and light blue Ole Brook t-shirt.
