Wesson eludes Hazlehurst, Lady Indians edge Lady Cobras

WESSON – The Wesson Cobras hosted the Hazlehurst Indians in Region 7-3A basketball action Friday night.
In girls’ action, the Lady Cobras fell to the Lady Indians after a close game for a disappointing loss of 49-47.
In the boys’ contest, the Cobras defeated the Indians with a final score of 62-57.
Wesson will host the Franklin County Bulldogs Tuesday night for another division test in the Snake Pit. The varsity teams begin play at 6 for the girls, and the boys play at 7:30 at the Wesson Attendance Center Gymnasium.
Hazlehurst 49, Wesson 47
The Lady Cobras (8-11, 0-2) fell to the Lady Indians Friday night in a heartbreaking 49-47 loss in district play.
Top Lady Cobra player, junior Jashia Smith, scored a total of 18 points, had 3 steals and 15 rebounds. Other top players for the Lady Cobras were Aurianna Vaughn and Carnisha Green who both had 8 points each. Vaughn had five steals and six rebounds, and Green had five rebounds. The Lady Cobras were 11/25 in free throw action.
For the Lady Indians, the top player of the game was Danisha Davis who topped the scoreboard with 20 points and had four rebounds and three steals. Allyson Banks scored 10 points with six rebounds and one steal. Top rebounder was Nicole Smith with nine rebounds. The Lady Indians were 4/10 in free throw action.
“This was a tough loss for us,” Wesson Coach Rusty Newman said. “We played sloppy and missed too many lay ups and free throws. We beat ourselves tonight. We have to play better.”
Wesson 62, Hazlehurst 57
The Wesson Cobras (15-3, 2-0) beat the Hazlehurst Indians in district play Friday night with a final score of 62-57.
Top Cobra players included junior Anthony Jones with 22 points, five rebounds and one steal and sophomore Tyler Robinson with 15 points, four rebounds and six steals. Senior Dartavious Dixon scored 11 points and had five rebounds and two steals. The Cobras were 21/34 in free throws.
The Indians top scorers were Shun Vardaman who had a point total of 21 and Dennis Shannon who had 10 points. Vardaman had nine rebounds, and Shannon had 11 rebounds. The Indians had an average of 5/9 in free throw action.
“This was a wild and ugly game.” Newman said. “We stuck to our game plan and played well as a team. Hazlehurst is a very athletic team but I thought we did a great job of handling their pressure.
“We also did a great job of rebounding the ball,” Newman continued. “I’m proud of the guys for playing hard and getting this much needed win. We were fortunate to come out on top tonight. We got behind early and had to play from behind a majority of the game. I’m proud of my guys for finding a way to get the win.”
