Lady Cougars cruise past Central Private

BAKER, La. – The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars secured a big 50-36 win over the Central Private Lady Rebels in Saturday MAIS basketball action.

In boys’ action, the Cougars suffered a tough 46-42 loss to Central Private.

Brookhaven Academy will resume action Tuesday as they welcome the Amite School Center Rebels to John R. Gray Gymnasium for four games. Junior varsity action is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Brookhaven Acad. 50, Central Private 36 

The Lady Cougars (5-16, 1-0) came out hitting on all cylinders as they quickly overwhelmed the Lady Rebels with a 17-5 run in the first quarter and continued their offensive aggressiveness with a 10-8 run in the second quarter to take a 27-13 lead into halftime.

In the second half, both teams scored 23-points apiece as BA cruised to the win.

Mary Claire White powered the Lady Cougars’ offense with 12 points. Alexis Byrd and Bailey Stewart chipped in with 10 points each. Hillary Wilson contributed seven points. Anna Katherine Smith scored six points and had seven assists. Anna Michael Smith had five points and grabbed five rebounds. Bailey Stewart was the leader on the boards with six rebounds.

Lauren West directed the Lady Rebels with a game-high 14 points. Shelby Ramero provided nine points. Samantha Ramero netted seven points.

Central Private 46, Brookhaven Acad. 42 

In the boys’ contest, the Cougars and Rebels fought hard in a defensive battle in the first half as BA managed to edge Central Private 12-11 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Rebels battles back to outscored the Cougars 15-9 to take a 26-21 lead into halftime.

In the third period, both teams struggle to find their offensive rhythm as Central Private managed to increase their lead with a 6-5 run to lead 32-26.

In final quarter, BA rallied back to outscored the Rebels 16-14 but fell short at the end of their comeback.

Senior forward Peyton Hood directed the Cougars (11-9, 1-0) with a game-high double-double of 22 points and 17 rebounds. Drake Flowers contributed eight points, four steals and grabbed four rebounds. Caleb Brown provided seven points, four assists and had three rebounds.

The Rebels placed three players in double figures as Alex Martin paced the Rebels with 12 points. Canaan Thomas and Thomas Richardson chipped in with 10 points apiece.
