Lady Bears claim first win; Panthers crush West Lincoln

The Brookhaven Panthers and the West Lincoln Lady Bears were victorious Thursday night in high school basketball at Jack Case Gymnasium.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Bears captured their first win of the season with a 46-32 triumph over the Brookhaven Lady Panthers.
In the boys’ contest, the Panthers’ aggressive defense and depth overwhelm the Bears as Ole Brook cruised to a 75-23 win.
Brookhaven and West Lincoln will have about 10 days off to rest up and enjoy the Thanksgiving break before returning to action Tuesday, Dec. 2.
The Bears (1-4) and Lady Bears (1-4) host Bogue Chitto for a couple of games, starting at 6 p.m..
The Panthers (4-1) and Lady Panthers (0-5) visits Meadville to take on the Franklin County Bulldogs, Game time starts at 5 p.m. with junior varsity action.
W. Lincoln 46, Brookhaven 32
The Lady Bears and Lady Panthers came out fighting for their first win of the season as both teams provided an exciting defensive contest. West Lincoln managed to seize control of the matchup in the end of the first quarter 6-4.
In the second, the Lady Bears controlled to increase their lead over Brookhaven with a 13-8 run to take a 19-12 lead into halftime.
In second half of action, West Lincoln managed to maintain a big lead over Ole Brook outscoring the Lady Panthers in 27-20 in the final two frames for the win.
“We did a good job controlling the game,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “The girls played hard and managed to score enough points on offense to win the game.”
The Lady Bears had four players to reach double figures in Thursday night action as Layton Sills lead the scoring drive with 15 points. Alli Mullins chipped in with 12 points. Hanna Moak contributed 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Demeshia Deer lead on the boards with 10 rebounds and scored 6 points.
Johnique James was the top scorer for the Lady Panthers with 8 points. Yasmine provided 6 points and was the leader on the boards with 7 rebounds.
“We are a very young and inexperience team, but we are continuing to get better everyday,” said Ole Brook’s coach Freda Craft. “The girls did a good job playing hard for all four quarters, but we still have things that we need to improve on.”
Brookhaven 75, W. Lincoln 23
The Panthers’ high octane offense and aggressive defense quickly set the tone of the contest as Ole Brook grabbed a 15-4 lead after one quarter of action.
In the second quarter, Brookhaven continued to apply pressure on West Lincoln as they spoiled the Bears’ rally attempts with a 18-7 run to secure a 33-11 lead at halftime.
In the second halftime, the Bears struggle to find their range offensively, but the Panthers were red hot offensively as Ole Brook blast West Lincoln 42-12 in the last two quarter for the win.
“The guys played hard throughout the contest,” said BHS coach Preston Wilson. “Our aggressiveness on defense was the deciding factor against West Lincoln. Overall, I was very pleased with everyone efforts and also glad to see several of our younger players step up tonight.”
The Panthers had four players to score in double digits as Damarius lead the pace with 13 points. Tavis Moore, Danarius Gray, and Marte Jones netted 10 points apiece. Moore was the leader on the boards with 8 rebounds. Garrick Smith provide assistance on the boards with 6 rebounds and scored 7 points.
The Bears had one player to score in double figures as Keshaun London led the charge with 12 points. Ronnie Edwards powered the boards with 6 rebounds and pumped in 6 points. Javian Mackabee grabbed five rebounds.
“Brookhaven has a really good team,” said Young. “We did a poor job against their pressure. We all need to take a look in the mirror and start working together as a team.”
