Former local resident dies in airplane crash

Earlier this week, the World Boxing Council in Mexico reported that former Brookhaven resident Jose Mauricio de Leon and his bother died in a airplane accident last Thursday.

Another Brookhaven High School alumnus said that Leon was a well-liked exchange student from Tampico, Mexico, in the 1985 BHS graduation class.

Leon was a businessman and promoter who established a successful boxing promotion company, De Leon Promotions in Mexico.

According to the WBC, Leon was heading to Veracruz to participate in a fishing tournament when the plane went down.
