Tickets top 6,000 over the holiday

While the rest of Mississippi relaxed over the three-day break, law enforcement officials were in full force since Memorial Day is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road.
Each year in the U.S., approximately 12.87 percent of traffic deaths occur during the holiday, averaging 437 fatalities each year, according to the National Safety Council. Mississippi is no exception to the increased vehicular activity.
State troopers issued a staggering 6,081 citations for the holiday weekend in Mississippi. They found 693 seatbelt violations, removed 132 impaired drivers from the highway and investigated 112 collisions, with three fatal accidents.
Friday, at approximately 8 a.m., Demitrus Swinney, 23 died after pulling into the path of another vehicle at the intersection of Highway 49 and Highway 433 in Yazoo County.
On Sunday, at approximately 12 a.m. Corbyn Maddox, 22 was struck by a vehicle while walking at mile marker 97 on Highway 78 in Lee County. Also on Sunday, approximately 2:40 p.m., Leroy Derrick, 93 was killed while attempting to cross Highway 4 in an all terrain vehicle in Tippah County. All victims died on the scene.
There were no fatalities in Lincoln County.
During the holiday weekend, the Brookhaven Police Department issued 87 citations including 34 seatbelt violations, coinciding with increased patrol during the “Click it or Ticket” campaign.
The Lincoln County Sheriff Department reported no significant change in traffic statistics for the holiday weekend.
