WESSON – Two sixth inning errors led to four runs for Jones County in a 5-2 victory over Copiah-Lincoln in MACJC South Division softball action on Saturday. In game two, the Lady Bobcats used three runs in the first inning to power them to a 7-1 win over the Lady Wolves.

Jones 5, Co-Lin 2

Game one was a close contest until the Lady Wolves’ defense allowed Jones to take control in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Wolves began a promising rally by loading the bases with no outs. The rally fell short though as Co-Lin only produced one run in the inning.

“I thought we competed well today,” said Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent. “We out hit No. 6 ranked Jones 10-5 in the first game, but we couldn’t get the key hits when we needed them. Our defense cost us game one, as they only had one earned run. They took advantage of our miscues. Brooke pitched a great game and didn’t deserve to lose.”

Jones County, ranked sixth in the nation, moved to 32-2, 18-2 in the South Division. Co-Lin fell to 18-15, 10-10 in the South Division.

The Lady Wolves out-hit the Lady Bobcats 10-5. Missy Romero was the leader at the plate for Co-Lin by going 2-for-3 with a single, a double, one RBI and one run scored. Sophomore Kayla Craft went 2-for-3. Savannah Johnston went 2-for-2 and Brooke Laigast also went 2-for-2 for the Lady Wolves. Breanna McKenzie and Kacie Berry both had a single apiece for Co-Lin

Co-Lin pitcher Brooke Gonzales gave up five hits and one earned run in seven innings.

An RBI single by Adrienne Wallace in the seventh inning was the only offense mustered by Co-Lin. Wallace finished 2-for-3 with two singles. Beth Fortenbery also finished 2-for-3 for the Lady Wolves. Meghan Johnson, Kayla Craft, and Brooke Laigast all had one single apiece for Co-Lin.

“We just didn’t capitalize on our opportunities in game two,” said Kent. “We had to play our best all around games today and just didn’t click on all cylinders.”

Co-Lin starter Rheagan Welch gave up five earned runs on eight hits in five innings of action.
