Filmmaker to bring movies back to Haven

Movies are being shown at the Haven Theatre for the first time in 30 years tonight, thanks to Arizona independent filmmaker Travis Mills.
Mills will be showing 10 films tonight for one night only beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Mills is the grandson of retired judge Donald Patterson. Mills said movies haven’t been shown in the Haven since the years when his parents and grandparents went.
Although once a movie theater, the Haven building has for a number of years been the home of the Brookhaven Little Theatre.
“This is the first time movies have been shown in the Haven in like 30 years,” Mills said. “This is the place where my mom and my grandfather went to see movies like “Gone With the Wind.” And, I hope this will open the door to for other viewings in the future.” He said the Haven could profit from having showings of classic movies and independent films such as his.
Mills recently completed a project of 52 films made in 52 weeks. The shorts were all based on works from literary greats like Earnest Hemingway, James Joyce and Edgar Allen Poe.
Mills said he will open the viewing with a short speech and at intermission will be open for questions.
“I am going to give a little a speech at the beginning,” he said, “and, then at intermission we will talk to audience members and get feedback on our work.
“One of our goals is to encourage local filmmakers that, ‘Hey you don’t have to live in Hollywood to make film, you can be anywhere and make good film. It isn’t difficult with today’s technology.”
Mills said his project was funded through a website called Kickstarter, where aspiring writers and filmmakers can pitch their projects and get funded.
Mills said his stories are about human relationships, “and even if they are funny, they have a dramatic story line to them.”
