Postseason excitement continues for local teams

Local football fans will have an easy task this Friday night as two local teams still remain alive in the hunt for a state football championship in week 14 of the Friday Night Lights football frenzy.
Brookhaven advanced to the second round of the playoffs and host a rematch game against their Region 5A foes, the Laurel Golden Tornadoes at King Field.
The defending 3A state champion Hazlehurst Indians will continue their march for a repeat as they prepare to host the Tylertown Chiefs in a tribal battle at Robert McDaniel Sr. Stadium.
In other region football action in the south bracket, French Camp Academy at Lumberton and Stringer visits Hinds AHS in the Class 1A playoffs. In the Class 2A playoffs, East Marion hosts Mize and Bassfield entertains Taylorsville. In the Class 3A playoffs, Seminary plays at Wilkinson County. Representing Class 4A, Vancleave plays at Quitman and St. Stanislaus visits Forrest County AHS. In the Class 5A race, Picayune invades Wayne County. For the Class 6A race, Meridian plays at Brandon and Oak Grove visits Petal.
Bogue Chitto has concluded their 2013 football season after a heart breaking 37-34 loss to the Panthers of French Camp Academy. The Bobcats are excited to start preparing for the upcoming season.
Brookhaven (9-3, 4-3), coached by Tommy Clopton, threw in a monkey wrench in many sport guru predictions and shook things up in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs after defeating the Pascagoula Panthers 28-20 at War Memorial Stadium last Friday.
This week, the Ole Brook Panthers will look for some revenge as they prepare for a rematch against the Laurel Golden Tornadoes.
Earlier in the season, on Sept. 27, the Golden Tornadoes came to King Field and destroyed Ole Brook in the second half for a 31-13 victory
The Golden Tornadoes (11-1), coached by Todd Breland, managed to stay alive in the playoffs after sneaking past the Stone County Braves 34-28 last Friday.
Key players for Laurel are: sophomore quarterback Keon Howard with 2,390 passing yards, junior running back Kobe Drummer with 844 yards rushing, junior receiver Omar Bayless with 705 yards receiving and sophomore Octavious Cooley with 927 yards receiving.
Defensively, Kenton Cooley and Devon Pruitt are considered the top hard hitters for Laurel.
BHS’s top performers last week included:
Fred Trevillion was the offensive leader for the Ole Brook Panthers, completing six-of-14 passes for 132 yards
Javontae Trevillion led all receivers with four receptions for 103 yards.
Defensively, Willie Bates paced Brookhaven with 11 tackles and Leo Lewis contributed seven stops. Ty Hill and Darious O’Quinn provided eight tackles apiece.
Hazlehurst (12-1, 5-0), coached by Randal Montgomery, continues their march for a state championship repeat after knocking off the Forest Bearcats 27-12 last Friday in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.
This week, the Indians have sharpened their tomahawks and arrows in preparation for a tribal showdown against the Tylertown Chiefs.
The Chiefs (9-5, 5-0), coached by Jason Johnson, easily advanced to the third round of the playoffs after skinning the Collins Tigers 28-12 last Friday.
Tylertown will test their ground attack against Hazlehurst’s tough defense.
Key players for Tylertown are: junior running back Ja’Mori Mark with 1,200 yards rushing, junior quarterback Ja’Moz Mark with 930 yard rushing and 900 yards passing, and sophomore running back Milton Harrell with 700 yards rushing.
The Chiefs had a well-balanced aerial attack as sophomore receiver Vashea Jefferson led the team with 384 yards.
Defensively, Joe Dillon is the leading tackler for Tylertown with 104 tackles. Other hard hitters are Joe Gesse, Davion Brister and Lamilton Andrews.
A look at Hazlehurst’s top performers last week:
The Indians struggled to get things going on offense as they finished with 246 yards total.
D’Alex Rockingham was the offensive leader with eight carries for 71 yards.
Jarvis Warner contributed 69 yards on the ground with six carries. He also completed two-of-10 passes for 34 yards and one interception. Dycelious Reese completed one pass for 45 yards and caught another for 20 yards.
John Bridges led all receivers with one catch for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Micheal Miller was the top hard hitter for Hazlehurst with 13 tackles. Jarvarius Tanner provided 12 stops and three sacks. Bridges helped with eight tackles. Johnkil Skipper had seven tackles and four sacks.
