PRENTISS – Prentiss swept a high school basketball double-header from Lawrence County in Saturday night hoops action at the Bulldogs’ Archie Fike Gymnasium.
In girls’ action, Wanda Ard’s Lady Bulldogs pulled away from Lawrence County in the final seven minutes of the game, earning a 55-48 win. In boys’ play, the fourth quarter again proved decisive, with PHS gutting out a 56-50 victory.
With those wins, Prentiss is off to a 1-0 start in both boys’ and girls’ action. As for Lawrence County, Vicki Rutland’s girls fell to 1-1 with the loss, and Pat Bridges’ Cougars dropped to 0-2.
In the girls’ game, LCHS scored the first three points of the fourth quarter, to knot the game at 38-38. After that, however, Prentiss outscored the Lady Cougars 17-8 to earn a hard-fought win.
“We could win the game if we cut down on turnovers and make more free throws,” Coach Rutland said.
“That said, I was very proud of the way our girls played tonight. Prentiss has a big, fast team that shoots really well. While I’m disappointed that we lost, I’m very satisfied with the overall effort.”
The dynamic combination of Joy Powell and Lexi Williams accounted for 42 of the Lady Bulldogs’ points. Dakendra Collins led Lawrence County with 16 points and nine rebounds. Briana Errington hit three first quarter three-pointers en route to a 10-point night. Deneisha Dickson and Latasha Rhodes each had three steals for the Lady Cougars.
In the boys’ game, Prentiss placed four players in double figures, and those four tallied 46 of the Bulldogs’ 56 points. Nick Barnes led with 13. Quinston Woodard added 12. Chauncey Baggett added 11, and James Hawthorne scored 10.
Freshman Keyshawn Feazell had a breakout night for Lawrence County, scoring 22 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Junior Keith Davis also had a good night for the Cougars who, despite losing, showed a remarkable improvement from their opening-night loss to West Lincoln. Davis also had a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
“We didn’t finish,” Coach Pat Bridges said. “We didn’t do what we had to do to finish the game, but, man, that was a much better performance than the other night. Prentiss has a fine team. I thought our guys competed really well tonight.”
The Lady Cougars will be in action today at West Jones against Northeast Jones as a part of a girls-only night of action.
