The strong shoulders of Chris Calcote will carry the Brookhaven Panthers in Saturday’s South Mississippi Class 5A Track Meet at Long Beach. Calcote was a double winner in last weekend’s rain-delayed Region 5A track meet at Pearl, winning the discus and the shot put.

Calcote threw the discus 146-02 and heaved the shot 49-00. He and his teammates were third in the points race behind region champion Pearl and runner-up McComb. Pearl scored 159 points, McComb 151 and Brookhaven 74. West Jones was fourth with 49.

In the girls division, Pearl dominated with 201 points, followed by West Jones with 109, McComb 100 and Brookhaven 51.

“Overall, it was a rough outing for us,” said BHS first-year track coach Darien Dorsey. “Hopefully, we can make a better showing at Long Beach.”

The region’s top four finishers in each event advance to Long Beach. The top four finishers at Long Beach advance to the State Championships at Pearl, May 10-11.

All six of Brookhaven’s relay teams qualified for the South State competition. Thomas Tyler was second in the shot put and Jessica Wilson was runner-up in the triple jump to highlight individual efforts.
