Vote against liquor is a vote for healthy city of Brookhaven

Dear Editor:
My wife and I enjoy living in Brookhaven and loved raising our family here. I have noticed two recent topics of interest involving our city – health and legalizing liquor sales.
Our city leaders have passed an ordinance to help secure a “Healthy Hometown ” designation. Also, state leaders are in town educating our citizens on the problems of obesity, especially among our children, and teenage pregnancy.
In contrast, some in our city are promoting the sale of alcoholic liquor in Brookhaven. What is known about alcohol and our health? Alcohol is the number one drug problem in America. Alcohol is the third leading cause of preventable death in our country. Alcohol-related car crashes are the number one killer of young adults in the United States. Alcohol is destroying many lives in our country. Liquors contain extreme amounts of alcohol.
Some in neighboring cities become intoxicated with the promises of increased tax revenue and legalized liquor only to wake up to the pounding reality of greater costs tot the city because of it. Brookhaven must not make this same mistake.
Brookhaven is a growing city. A vote against liquor is a vote for a healthy Brookhaven.
We love “Ole Brook.”
Sincerely,
Greg Warnock
