JACKSON – Anthony Wilson of Brookhaven achieved powerlifting history last weekend. Wilson placed third in the MHSAA Class 5A State Powerlifting competition at the Mississippi Coliseum. Competing in the 308-pound weight division, Wilson had personal bests of 340 pounds in the bench press, 540 pounds in the deadlift and a 500-pound squat for a total of 1,380 pounds, also a PR.
“Overall, I’m pleased with Anthony’s performance,” said BHS powerlifting coach Russ Britt. “He has come a long way this season and I’m expecting Anthony and the whole team to come back stronger next season.
“Anthony was all smiles when he was on the podium accepting his medal,” Britt noted. “He’s a great kid and many students look up to him at BHS.”
Wilson edged Pearl River Central’s Harry Godwin for the bronze medal on his final lift. Wilson was runner-up to Pearl’s Chris Burleson and Oxford’s Joel Forrester.
