Lady Cats nip Cathedral

BOGUE CHITTO – The Bogue Chitto Lady Cats captured an important 1-0 win over the Natchez Cathedral Lady Green Wave Monday night in Region 7-1A softball action.
“This was an important win,” said BC coach Scott Leggett. “This set up a huge matchup with West Lincoln, today.
“Overall, Rheagan Welch pitched a great game and our defense was solid behind her,” continued Leggett. “Mollie Devening is a good and tough pitcher for Cathedral, but I thought we could have hit her a lot better.
In another huge region contest Monday night, the West Lincoln Lady Bears escaped Vicksburg with a 5-4 victory over the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes in nine innings of action.
In Saturday’s late results at Loyd Star’s tournament, BC edged Brookhaven 5-4.
The Cats (14-6, 3-1) continue action today. They visit West Lincoln to battle the Lady Bears (10-9, 3-1) for the No.1 seed in the Region 7-1A softball race. Junior varsity action kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.

The Lady Cats and Lady Green Wave battled in a tough, physical defensive contest.
In the bottom of the first inning, BC scored their only run, when second baseman Daley Roberts led off with a double and later scored.
Cathedral attempted to rally late in the sixth and seventh innings but the Lady Cats tightened up on defense and managed to complete the shutout.
Senior Rheagan Welch pitched the win for BC with six strikeouts and three walks. Welch allowed only two hits in the shutout.
Mollie Devening suffered the loss for Cathedral with four strikeouts and three walks.
Roberts was the offensive leader for the Lady Cats with a double and a single. Hitting safely were Adrienne Wallace, Mattie Avants and Alana Nettles.
Claire Upton and Devening directed the Lady Green Wave’s offense with a single apiece.
“Good game,” said Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell. “Overall, I was very pleased with my girls efforts. We have been in a major slump after losing to West Lincoln and St. Aloysius. This game was a big boost for us. Hopefully, we can sneak in the playoff picture with a couple of wins and some help from others.”
St. Aloysius holds the advantage over Cathedral for third place in the region race. The top three teams advance to the playoffs.
In JV action, Bogue Chitto defeated Natchez Cathedral 5-3.
Alana Nettle tossed the win for the Lady Cats with two strikeouts and six walks.
Brooke Myers paced BC’s offense with two singles. Zariah Matthews, Lauren McCaffery and Kerri McGehee hit safely.

Christian Black was the winning hurdler for the Lady Cats with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Katherine Shell absorbed the setback for the Brookhaven Lady Panthers with two strikeouts and one walk.
Senior Adrienne Wallace directed BC’s offense with a double and a single. Black contributed a pair of singles. Colby Kirkland ripped a double. Alexis Givens, Avants and Roberts hit safely.
Senior catcher Christen Benson was the offensive leader for the Lady Panthers with a home run and a single. Katie Grace Culpepper provided a triple and Shelby Peavey singled.
