Smith hurls no-hitter at Franklin Co.

WESSON – Saturday the Wesson Cobras shut out Franklin County 4-0 as sophomore right-hander Mack Smith (4-0) pitched a no-hitter. He struck out 5 batters and walked 1.

“Mack did a great job,” said Wesson coach Seth Lofton. “He struggled a little bit but he made big pitches when he had to. He had a good day.”

The Cobras collected 7 hits in the 7-inning game. First baseman Cullen Greer slugged a 3-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Second baseman Jace Alexander singled twice. Caleb Skinner, Bailey Warren, Brandon Nettles and Alex Smith singled.

Ethan Verduin was the losing pitcher. He gave up 7 hits, walked 6, struck out 1 and allowed 4 earned runs.

Wesson raised its record to 12-2 overall.

The Cobras play at Bassfield Tuesday night, starting with a junior varsity game at 4:30. The varsity plays at 6:30.
