Co-Lin tops Baton Rouge, bows to Galveston ‘Caps

BATON ROUGE – The Co-Lin Wolfpack earned a spit in non-division action today taking game one against the host Baton Rouge Bears 4-2 and dropping game two against the Galveston (TX) Whitecaps 7-1.
The Wolfpack (2-2) will host Kaskaskia (IL) noon and Mississippi Delta at 5:15 p.m. in their home opener on Saturday. Kaskaskia plays Delta at 2:45. Listen live on www.colinathletics.com with Robert Williamson, the voice of the Wolfpack.
“We played two good ball teams,’ said Co-Lin coach Keith Case. “Our two starting pitchers kept us in both games. Our bullpen wasn’t able to help us in the second game.”
Co-Lin 4, Baton Rouge 2
The Wolfpack jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Outfielder Dominic Savage led off the inning with a single. Philip Lott drew a walk and both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Second baseman Gabe Wilson’s ground out scored Savage from third. Caleb Dugas followed with a double to center field scoring Lott.
The Bears would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of four Co-Lin errors and a two-run single by Nicholas Ber.
In the top of the fifth, Co-Lin would break the 2-all tie. Lott reached on an error and scored on Wilson’s double to center field. Wilson advanced to third on the throw and scored on Shane McKinley’s ground out.
For Co-Lin, Wilson went 2-4 with a double and a single for 2 RBIs. Catcher Jonathan Santana singled twice. Dugas added an RBI double. Savage and Matt Smith added support with a single apiece.
Darren Bueche led the Bears with a pair of singles. Matthew Willis doubled. Bond Babin, Taylor Stagg, and Ber added a single apiece.
Tyler Simmons got the win for Co-Lin scattering five hits, striking out four, and walking four in five innings of work. Tyler Case earned the save pitching two innings. He gave up one hit, struck out one and walked one.
Austin Greer absorbed the loss for Baton Rouge allowing three earned runs on five hits, striking out three and walking three in 3.2 innings. Jeremy Marshall pitched the final three innings allowing one hit and striking out three.
Galveston 7, Co-Lin 1
After three scoreless innings, the Wolfpack took a 1-0 lead on freshman Cole Paige’s solo home run.
In the bottom of the fifth, Galveston exploded for six runs off Co-Lin pitching. The Whitecaps added another run in the sixth to increase their lead to 7-1.
Starter Julio Rivera absorbed the loss pitching 4.2 innings allowing three runs on five hits, striking out two and walking one. Gage Miles relieved Rivera in the fifth. He allowed two earned runs and walked one. Ryan Goddard followed Miles on the mound. He gave up one run on two hits and walked one. Gabe Wilson finished the game pitching one inning allowing one run and walking two.
Aaron Graham picked up the win, allowing one hit in one inning of work. Starter Mack Rogers went two innings allowing one hit, striking out one and walking two. Also seeing action were Jesse Valdez (5 H, 1 ER, 1K), Ben Cone (1K), and Justin Walton (1K).
At the plate, Savage doubled and singled for Co-Lin. Paige had a home run.. Adding support with a single apiece were Dugas, Wilson, Smith and Keith Martin.
For Galveston, Cutter McDowell (2 RBIs) and Chris Lopez had a pair of singles. Austin Barron doubled. Jesus Garcia and Tyler Sullivan singled.
