Co-Lin played stellar defense, keeping BRCC from scoring as the visitors stranded 11 baserunners.

Sophomore shortstop Josie Porter led off the game with a walk. Porter stole second and later scored on Hannah Roberts’ 2-out double.

A pitcher’s duel ensued as the lead remained 1-0 until the 5th. The Lady Wolves utilized classic small ball as Porter led off with a single and stole second. Freshman Kayla Craft sacrificed her over to third. Sophomore catcher Karla Beth Hux laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to plate Porter for a 2-0 lead.

That run would prove to be the game-winner as the visitors strung together 3 hits in the seventh for 1 run. The potential tying run was gunned down trying to advance to third on a single.

The Lady Wolves only managed 5 hits, but made the most of them. Shelby Mitchell, Kaitlin Moak and Kaitlan Melton added singles

“Brooke and our defense did a great job keeping us in the game,” said Co-Lin coach Allen Kent. “It was nice for Brooke to get the win against BRCC, as she is from Denham Springs and has played with and against most of the girls on the team.”

The Lady Wolves bats woke up in Game 2, pounding out 15 hits. Freshman pitcher Missy Romero held BRCC scoreless until the 5th, as the visitors scored 3 runs, trimming the lead to 4-3. The Lady Wolves responded with a 6 run fifth to stretch the lead to 10-3. In the 6th, Chynna Coghlan replaced Romero and allowed one run on 2 hits.

The Lady Wolves ended the contest by the 8-run rule with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th.

Romero upped her record to 2-0. The San Antonio product struck out 1 and walked 2, allowing 8 hits and 2 earned runs in 5 innings.

Porter paced the offensive attack with a double, single, walk, a stolen base and 3 runs scored. Freshman Beth Fortenberry singled twice for 3 RBI, a walk and 3 runs scored. Freshman Kayla Craft doubled and singled for Co-Lin. Shelby Mitchell singled twice. Romero helped her own cause with 2 singles and a walk.

Jaylee Fernandez, a freshman from the San Antonio area, singled twice, walked and scored twice. Catcher Kacie Berry singled twice.

“We’re pleased with the two wins,” said Coach Kent. “Josie Porter had an outstanding day on defense. Porter and Fortenberry combined on a textbook 4-6-3 double play during Game 2.

“Baton Rouge has a very good offensive team,” he noted. “We were patient at the plate, drawing six walks in the second game.”

Co-Lin hosts Meridian CC Wednesday for a 1p.m. doubleheader.
