Brookhaven seniors Shelby Case and Shelby Peavey plan to be roommates at Meridian Community College. They signed softball scholarships Thursday during a ceremony held in the Roach Wing of the BHS library.

The room, lined with bookshelves and decorated with green and white balloons in recognition of Meridian’s school colors, was filled with family and friends for the occasion. Meridian softball coach Faith Robinson smiled brightly as family groups posed for photographers and friends.

Robinson, a Clinton native, is in her first year at the helm of Meridian’s softball fortunes. She played softball for Meridian CC and Mississippi State University as a third baseman before entering the coaching field. She plans to build a state title team. One of her goals is to establish a recruiting base in southwestern Mississippi.

Case, a 5-foot-2 outfielder, is the daughter of Tony and Jenny Campbell. Her stepmother, Deedee Case, and stepfather, Jonathan Campbell, also were present for the ceremony.

“I like the coaches and the environment at Meridian,” said Case. “I feel real comfortable there.”

Case said she plans to pursue a career in teaching and coaching. Her favorite high school subject is English. She also plays soccer and is a member of the BHS cheerleading squad.

“Shelby Case has been a great defensive player for us,” said BHS softball coach Chad Walker. “She’s a team leader.”

Both Case and Peavey are honor roll students.

Peavey, also 5-foot-2, is the 18-year-old daughter of Todd Peavey. Her paternal grandparents, Billy and Virginia Peavey, were present for the occasion. Her older brother, Nick Peavey, is a sophomore outfielder for Northwest Florida State CC in Pensacola.

“I really like the coaches at Meridian,” said Peavey. “They make me feel welcome. Shelby will be my roommate.”

She plans to seek a career in corporate law. Her favorite high school subject is economics.

Peavey batted .400 for the Lady Panthers as a junior. She had 22 RBIs.

“Case is a good hitter, a slapper,” said Walker. “You can depend on her to get a hit.”

Robinson said Case “will be a good leader on the field. She will add to our team on offense and defense.”

Robinson said Peavey possessed exceptional speed on the base paths and is a switch hitter. “She’s very speedy. I’m impressed with her hitting. She does a good job from the left side.”

Looking ahead, Robinson said she planned to have Case and Peavey playing on a summer travel team.
