Lady Panthers elude Loyd Star

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers managed to hold off the Loyd Star Lady Hornets for a 10-7 victory Thursday night in softball action at the Ole Brook Softball Complex.
“We cannot make that many mistakes against a good hitting team and expect to win,” said Brookhaven coach Chad Walker. “We must play a lot tougher in the crunch time.”
Brookhaven (9-4, 1-1) and Loyd Star (5-9, 2-2) resume action Saturday. The Lady Hornets will host a tournament beginning at 9 a.m.
Other teams participating are Bogue Chitto, West Lincoln, Wesson and University Christian. There will be two pools. The pool championship is 7:30 p.m.
Brookhaven 10, Loyd Star 7
Softball fans witnessed an offensive show between the Lady Panthers and Hornets. Both teams fought hard as Brookhaven captured an early 5-1 lead after four innings.
In the fifth and sixth inning, Loyd Star outscored Ole Brook 6-5, but the Lady Panthers managed to hold off the Lady Hornets’ surge in the seventh for the win.
Senior Brooke Hosick was the winning pitcher for the Lady Panthers with one strikeout and one walk. Kelsey McCullough suffered the setback for Loyd Star with two strikeouts and one walk.
Shortstop Taylor Murray was the offensive leader for Brookhaven with a double and two singles. Hosick contributed three singles. Katie Grace Culpepper provided two singles. Katherine Shell ripped a triple. Hitting safely were Shelby Peavey and Christen Benson.
Julie Smith paced the Lady Hornets with four singles. Lexie Butler hit a triple. Haley Smith had a double. Abigail Thornton and Ali Gartman hit safely.
“We hit the ball a lot better,” Loyd Star coach Jan Delaughter. “The girls fought hard to stay in the game. Overall, we still made too many errors to cost us at the end.” Ole Brook committed 8 errors to Loyd Star’s 5.
In JV action, The Lady Panthers and Lady Hornets finished in an 8-all tie.
Haley Speaks led Brookhaven with two singles. Ivy Smith, Jada Henderson and Culpepper hit safely.
Raigan Smith directed Loyd Star with a triple. Mandy Russell hit a double. Lesley Walker and Julie Smith singled.
