Sunday morning accident claims two, injures three

A Wesson man and teenager were killed in aSunday morning accident on Interstate 55 at Exit 38, said LincolnCounty Coroner/Medical Examiner Clay McMorris.
The accident was reported around 4:48 a.m. after a 1994 Chevroletpickup truck carrying five people went off the road and caught fireafter hitting a concrete ditch and a tree at the exit on Interstate55 north, said Sgt. Rusty Boyd, Mississippi Highway Patrol PublicAffairs officer. The driver of the vehicle has not been determined,Boyd said.
McMorris identified the victims as Brandon Pervis Smith, 22, ofWesson, and Kara Leigh Darby, 15, of Wesson.
Other occupants included Cody C. Reeves, 20, of Brookhaven; CorrinaMead, 15, address unavailable, and Alania Cupit, 19, of Brookhaven,Boyd said. All sustained severe injuries.
Reeves, the only occupant to be wearing a seatbelt, was taken theKing’s Daughters Medical Center and then on the University ofMississippi Medical Center. Mead was taken to Southwest RegionalMedical Center in McComb.
Cupit was taken to KDMC and then to UMC before being transported tothe Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., Boyd said. She wasbeing treated for burns to her legs, feet and hands.
“The cause of the collision is still under investigation,” Boydsaid.
Funeral services for Darby, who was a sophomore at WessonAttendance Center, are scheduled for Wednesday at Stringer FamilyFuneral Home Chapel in Hazlehurst. Visitation is from 5 until 8p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
Services for Smith will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Macedonia BaptistChurch. Visitation is Wednesday from 5 until 9 p.m. at RiverwoodFamily Funeral Service.
