Co-Lin women sweep Heartland

WESSON — The No. 10 ranked Co-Lin Lady Wolves swept a Sundaydoubleheader from the Heartland (IL) Lady Hawks 2-1 and 13-0.Co-Lin will play in the Northeast Tournament in Booneville onFriday and Saturday.

Haley Sones hit a 2-run, first-inning home run to lift the LadyWolves to victory. Co-Lin sophomore pitcher Bethany Pinkstonscattered 6 hits, allowed 1 run, struck out 6 and walked 2 in 7innings.
Hanna Mennenga absorbed the loss, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits andwalking none in 7 innings.
“Both pitchers really did well,” said Co-Lin coach Allen Kent. “Thegame could have gone either way. Bethany didn’t have her A game butshe still managed to keep them in check for the most part. Weplayed great defense behind her.”
At the plate, Co-Lin leftfielder Emily Smith led the way with adouble and a single. Ashley McCaffery singled twice. Catcher LakinLockhart singled.
The Lady Hawks were led by Mackenzie Foiles with 2 singles. ArielFrantz tripled and Heather Luth doubled. Adding a single apiecewere Haley Haning and Rachael Anello.
Co-Lin 13, Heartland 0
Freshman pitchers Brooke Delaughter (2 K, 0 BB) and Sarah Anthonycombined for the 3-hit shutout. Anthony hurled the last 2 innings,fanning 1 and holding Heartland hitless.
“Our pitchers really did well on the day,” said Kent. “Heartlanddoes have a good team, despite the score of the second game. Theywon the NJCAA national championship in 2009.”
The Lady Wolves pounded out 11 hits in the game, led by Stevie AnnWright and Tammy Alford with a triple and a single for 3 RBIs each.Ashley Bounds and Carrie Moak doubled. Adding support with a singlewere Lockhart, Kacey Smith, Bobbie Cochran, and Leah Britt.
“We started seven freshmen in the second game,” Kent noted.
Co-Lin scored 6 runs in the first inning with 2 outs.
