Federal funds eyed to offset state cuts

The Brookhaven School District can expect $574,000 in funds fromthe federal government to help offset future cuts in the upcomingschool year.
The Education Jobs Program is granting the district the one-timefunds to only be used to compensate school-level educators.
Board members were welcoming of the additional money.
“We know next year is going to be another tight year,” BrookhavenSchool District Superintendent Lea Barrett said during Tuesdaynight’s board meeting.
The district is planning to put the money they originally set asideto pay their educators in their “Rainy Day Fund” to prepare for therough economic road ahead. Barrett is expecting to see another $1million cut in state funding due to lingering difficult economicconditions and sagging revenue collections.
Policy changes were also discussed in Tuesday’s meeting.
Barrett’s revision request to Board Policy KBA in order to bring itin line with legislation passed in the last session was accepted.The new legislation requires public record requests to be respondedto within seven days, one week shorter than the previouslegislation.
“It’s a good thing to be in line with the law,” board member StanPatrick said.
Board members were also treated to the music of 30 fourth-gradestudents led by music teacher Joy Johnson. The presentation byBrookhaven Elementary School consisted of the students singingthree songs about being a kind person and not bullying.
