Wesson Cobras outscore Franklin County Bulldogs

WESSON – The Wesson Cobras held off a late rally by the FranklinCounty Bulldogs to secure a 17-12 win Monday night in varsitybaseball action.

With the win, the Cobras improve to 3-4 and the Bulldogs stand at4-4.

In today’s games, Wesson hosts West Lincoln for a junior varsitygame at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6:30.

“It was a scoring fest,” said Wesson head coach Hugh Knight afterthe win. “I was proud that we won. We have had some close, toughlosses.”

At the end of the first inning, the teams were tied 1-all. TheBulldogs went up 4-1 in the top of the second but the Cobras cameback with 4 runs to take a 5-4 lead.

Franklin County pushed its lead to 7-5 in the top of the third with3 runs but Wesson answered with 6 runs for an 11-7 lead. TheBulldogs cut the deficit to 11-8 with a run in the top of thefifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cobras tacked on 6 runs for a 17-8lead. With two outs, the Bulldogs added 4 runs to cut the Wessonlead to 17-12 before the final out was made.

“We swung the bats well,” said Franklin County head baseball coachBrent Calcote. “Defensively, we have to get better.”

Gibb Britt (1-0) got the win in relief of starter Zach Davis. Brittfanned 4 walked 3 and allowed 4 hits. Davis struck out 3, walked 2and allowed 6 hits.

Absorbing the loss was Dehendrent Collins (1-1) with 6 strikeouts,4 walks, 1 hit batter and 11 runs allowed. Working the final 2innings was Preston Shelton with 2 walks, 1 hit batter and 6 runsallowed.

Cobras Sack Hazlehurst

In recent action, Wesson dumped Hazlehurst 8-0 as Caleb Broomestruck out 17 batters and allowed one hit for the win. BrandonAllen delivered a home run.

Wesson got a 2 RBI home run and a 2 RBI double from Matt Smith.Davis ripped a 2-RBI double. Kyle Cross doubled for an RBI. CalebBroome doubled and singled. Britt also doubled. Brandon Allen hadan RBI single.

Austin McFarland delivered a solo home run for Franklin Co. HunterHatcher singled 3 times. Calvin Robinson doubled twice.

Junior varsity action

Wesson whipped Franklin County 13-1 in the JV game.
