Lincoln County’s Timothy Travis said he turned the lights off inthe front of his house and watched the snowfall – heavy for southMississippi – as it covered the ground Friday night.
“I don’t know if it’s good or bad that it seems like we alwaysget snow on the weekend,” he said. “When I was a kid I’d have beenmad because we don’t miss school, but as an adult I think it’s agood thing, because we can stay home and be warm.”
And Stephanie Jordan, who lives near Monticello, said she andher children tried to build a snowman Saturday morning, but thesnow wouldn’t stick.
“It was too powdery, but we laid down and made snow angels,” shesaid. “I got snow down my collar.”
While the children were nestled all snug in their beds, theNational Weather Service reported around 4 inches of snow inLincoln County. Civil Defense Director Clifford Galey said he hadabout 2.5 inches at his house.
But either way, a thick white blanket covered the area Saturdaymorning and stayed for as long as it could, mostly melting off byabout the middle of the day.
Even through the thick of the snowfall, local emergencyofficials were still on the roads, making sure motorists were safe.Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Rusty Boydsaid troopers were combing the interstates, making sure bridges andoverpasses were not collecting ice.
“It was uneventful, so we just made sure that if the bridgeswere icing up, we contacted the (Department of Transportation) andthey would come out and treat them,” he said. “Last night it hadn’tbeen cold enough long enough for the stuff to stick to thehighways.”
Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said there was onefatality, Jason Lofton of Rowlo Trail, but otherwise there was nomarked increase in accident. He said there were a couple of casesof people who had slid off the roads, but otherwise things werefairly calm.
Galey reported one tree down in the county, but otherwise noweather-related problems.
He said that temperatures will start to rise again as the weekcontinues.
“It looks like the first of the week we’ll have rain, and thenthere will be bad weather Tuesday and Tuesday night,” Galey said.”There’s a chance of some severe stuff Tuesday evening or Tuesdaynight.”
